“The film, Wombling Free” was not, in my opinion, a very good film. It was made on a very low budget, and did not follow either the stop-frame technique used by Ivor Wood for the original TV series, nor the pop group Wombles (which would of course have been too big, unless giant scenery could have been created). Director Lionel Jefferies chose to use little people in costumes for this low budget movie, shot at Pinewood studios. The screenplay was dire. But for me it was my first chance to score a movie, - and if I had not agreed, they would have got somebody else. Having accepted the job I went at it with gusto, and we used a full orchestra, recording to picture. Some interesting cues resulted. I’m particularly fond of the long cue for the opening titles, which visited ancient historical events and current day geographical locations in its explanation of the “fact” that Wombles have been around for a long time, and all over the world. So I got to write music for the creation of the world, right up to the present day, with Wombles at the Taj Mahal, Buckingham Palace and in Manhatten. All the songs on the album are re-records, - partly for union reasons (using the scores from the original records) – and Lionel asked me to add a section pastiching “The Sound Of Music” in the middle of “White Tie and Tails”, which was fun, but rather baffling if you know the original!”
