In 1976 I was invited to produce the album which became known as “The Golden Mile” for the Kursaal Flyers. They had risen out of the pub rock theme and their act was quite theatrical and colourful. they were essentially a rock band with country tinges (including a steel guitar player) part of what made them entertaining was the fact that each of them had a particular sartorial personality. The lead singer, Paul Shuttleworth for example often presented himself in a loud check in suit in the manor of a “spiv”. They had been concerned that the entertainment value of their live set was not reflected on their records and we decided to remedy that by my adopting a theatrical approach to the arrangements. Their most endutring track was the hit “Little Does She know” recorded in August 1976 I had arranged it so that it would build to a climax at the end, incorporating cannons, a snatch from the Halleluja chorus and all sorts of other fun.
