The songs I wrote and produced for The Hollies were “If The Lights Go Out”, “Soldier’s Song” and “Can’t Lie No More”. We recorded Allan Clarke’s lead vocals, and the other Hollies’ brilliant harmonies all at Lansdowne Studios. When we got to “Soldier’s Song”, I knew I had the last verse of lyrics to write, - but because time was of the essence Allan started singing the first two verses as I sat in the control room producing, talking to him and simultaneously writing and finishing  the third one, so that it was ready for him to sing just as he finished singing the second verse! Deadlines, the adrenalin of deadlines!
