“My work with Elkie was just the one single, - “Lilac Wine’. It was recorded at Wessex Studios, with a big orchestra and Elkie singing a live vocal as we recorded the orchestra. We only did two takes, and I seem to remember we used the second take. Derek Green, my friend who ran A&M Records in this country, had rung me while I was driving along in my car one Friday evening. He wanted a single, and he wanted it quickly. I booked a studio and orchestra for the Monday following, giving myself only the weekend to arrange both “Lilac Wine” and its B side. It was an exhilarating experience to score it knowing that we would be recording it on the Monday, and in fact I stayed up all night on the Sunday finishing it ready for the session only a couple of hours later!
