Note from Mike:
“I worked with Cliff several times.
The first time was when I had returned fom my boat voyage to Australia and he called to ask if I had any more hits like “A Winter’s Tale” which I had just made with David Essex and which had gone to #2 in the UK singles charts. As it happened, I did! Cliff came round to my office in Soho and heard me demonstrate “Please Don’t Fall In Love” at the piano. He decided there and then that we should record it, and it went to number seven in the UK singles charts. The B side was “Too Close To Heaven” which I also wrote and produced. Cliff is technically one of the best singers I have ever worked with, and extremely collaborative in terms of taking suggestions and delivering a beautiful vocal. We also worked together when I made my album “The Hunting Of The Snark” for which he sang the song “The Bellman’s Speech”.
